December 26, 2019–With several consecutive days of rainfall across the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Basin, a visual survey was planned from Bristol to Wewahitchka. Conditions were checked at boat ramps and floodplain areas including public roads near the oil & gas sites in Calhoun County. Sites from Bristol to Wewahitchka were visited.
The US Army Corps of Engineers operates the five federal reservoirs along the Chattahoochee River north of the Apalachicola River. These include Buford Dam (Lake Lanier), West Point Dam, Walter F. George Lock and Dam, George W. Andrews Lock and Dam, and Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam (Lake Seminole).
Generally, upstream reservoir releases can take nearly a week to reach the lower stretches of the Apalachicola River.
