River Watch is a core program of Apalachicola Riverkeeper. The Riverkeeper and volunteer staff routinely conduct visual surveys of the Apalachicola River and Bay via kayak or motorboat. Visual survey are also conducted via land. During visual surveys, habitat change and other differences are noted. Photos are routinely taken. Pollution problems or concerns are reported to appropriate regulatory agencies.
Professionally-trained volunteers are essential in conducting visual surveys along with assisting in debris clean up events. Monitoring the Apalachicola River (and its sloughs and tributaries) is also an effective tool to increase the visibility of our work in   the communities in the Apalachicola watershed. We regularly meet and interact with local residents, boaters, anglers and other river recreational users, through time on the water. In fact, patrols help us recruit volunteers and share ecological news with others.
Of note, the Honda Foundation and the Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation supported river monitoring funding for upgrades and repairs to our aging motorboat in winter 2018. Thank you!
