Apalachicola has changed and transformed over the decades. Take Scipio Creek, located at the end of Market Street where Apalachicola Riverkeeper now has its office in the Scipio Creek Marina. The basin was widely known as the Mill Pond because a sawmill once operated here, processing logs that were floated down the river. It is now primarily a boat basin and a good place to view wildlife. Nearby, a quarter mile boardwalk leads to a sweeping view of Scipio Creek and the vast Apalachicola Bay estuary. As the heat of a Panhandle summer approaches, here is a cool down poem of Scipio Creek in winter.
Winter Marsh by Kayak, Scipio Creek
Black crows swirl in gray wind;
Weary trawlers,at rest on uneasy brown water
that slaps my thin boat.
Â
Fast behind, the harbor,
to course into the winter marsh
of broken grass and ancient current.
Â
There, a solitary loon
labors the headwind
and the unease of my approach,
flailing sodden wings
to impossibly rise in the leaden sky.
Â
A moment of paths crossed
in the salt marsh,
and now, again,
we are both alone.Â
