Into the Mystic on Owl Creek

Winter is the season for reflecting and the natural scenery of the Apalachicola River region is stunning.  Today, participants of our Eco-Outings Program met up for cool, misty morning at Owl Creek. The backdrop of giant tupelo and gnarled cypress trees in mottled hues of gray against smooth blackwater proved awe-inspiring.  Trip photos here.
I’m uncertain how to describe the tranquility of the surrounding forest and its restorative effects on our human senses. Undoubtedly, if you’ve explored remote stretches of the 100+ mile Apalachicola River and its remarkable 400 miles of sloughs, creek and lakes, you’ve experienced this. Some might call it mesmerizing or even energizing. We glided along the creek in kayaks absorbing the wintry landscape, group camaraderie along with the ecology and history tidbits provided by the volunteer leaders. Each of us was strongly reminded of the need for the continued protection of this extraordinary stretch of natural world.
Thank you Outings Leaders Doug Alderson and Fountain Hutchison for providing an exceptional, memorable experience.
