Florida DEP Triennial Review

November 25, 2019

By Georgia Ackerman

Waterkeepers Florida, including Apalachicola Riverkeeper, have been active collaboratively working on water quality issues across the state. This includes involvement in the FL DEP’s Triennial Review. States are required under the Federal Clean Water Act to conduct a comprehensive review of all water quality standards at least once every three years.

Over the past year, Waterkeepers Florida (WKFL) members have attended discussions with DEP officials and participated in public workshops.

In short, the Triennial Review is the process where the state considers changing or adding water quality standards. Waterkeepers Florida want to see greater efforts in curtailing pollution at its source. Collectively, we have also advocated for adding cyanotoxin standards. Cyanotoxins are toxins produced by bacteria called cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae.
