Give a Hoot! Ditch the Use of Disposable Plastic

June 29–Volunteers David Morse and Lynn Wilder collected sand and water samples for microplastics testing at “Second Sandbar” across from Abercrombie Landing (also known as Pine Log) on the Apalachicola River.

David and Lynn, along with Riverkeeper Georgia Ackerman also did a site clean up. They filled the boat with piles of glass, plastic, cans and other debris left behind by boaters. This is a popular recreation site. One of the easiest ways to reduce waste is avoiding single-use, disposable plastics.

Please carry out the sand bar picnic and party stuff. Plastics break down in the sand and water. The tiny microplastics ends up in fish and plant life–and eventually in humans. We are consuming our plastic trash via fish.

As a highlight of the morning, a mother manatee and her calf swam past heading upstream during the work.

Join us for the Annual Coastal Clean Up on September 12.
