May 17, 2024 – Join us in congratulating the 2024 recipient of the Katie Herzog scholarship, Alexcia McNair, who will be graduating from Franklin County Schools (FCS) this spring. The scholarship will award her $2000 towards college tuition. On Tuesday, May 21, Alexcia joined Apalachicola Riverkeeper staff for a reception and boating trip to celebrate her academic achievements.

The Katie Herzog award celebrates the life of Katie Herzog who was a longtime high school educator, along with her husband, Tom Herzog, and an avid supporter of Apalachicola Riverkeeper. Katie was engaged with the Apalachicola River Blueway map and National Scenic Trail projects and regularly attended Apalachicola Riverkeeper events, greeting guests with her beaming smile. Former Apalachicola Riverkeeper Executive Director, Georgia Ackerman, describes Katie as, “…the epitome of putting care into action in protecting our region’s precious natural resources, especially the Apalachicola River and Bay.”

Alexcia was joined by family and friends to celebrate her award with Apalachicola Riverkeeper staff, plus Tom Herzog, with a boat trip up the river.
