What Kites, Microbes and the Civil War have in Common

Apalachicola Riverkeeper recently welcomed Dr. Chrysanthemum (Chris) Watkins, Academics & Partnerships Coordinator at FSU Sustainable Campus, along with five guests, for an educational boat excursion on the Apalachicola River. For several participants, it was their first opportunity to experience the river from the water while learning firsthand about the ecology, history, and restoration efforts that make this watershed so special.

The journey began at East River, which has recently been the focus of restoration efforts. Part of being a Riverkeeper means always keeping eyes on every part of the watershed. Cameron spotted a downed tree blocking our route, and she will do what Riverkeepers do -ensure the obstruction is removed.

Along the way, we watched Swallow-tailed Kites gliding and swooping overhead, catching and eating small insects and lizards “on the wing” without ever touching the ground. These remarkable birds migrate from South America to the wooded wetlands and cypress swamps of Florida in early spring (February–March) to mate, breed, and raise their young. By late August, they begin their incredible 5,000-mile journey back to South America.

Owl Creek became an outdoor classroom as Cameron explained how water levels, floodplains, and even tiny microbes all work together to keep the river healthy. Here’s the short version.

A floodplain is a generally flat area of land adjacent to a river, stream, or other body of water that naturally floods during periods of high water. These areas temporarily store excess water, naturally filter pollutants, and provide highly fertile soil and rich habitat for diverse ecosystems.

Microbes (or microorganisms) are tiny living organisms—such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa—that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. In rivers and floodplains, they break down organic matter, recycle nutrients, and help keep the ecosystem healthy.

For these important microbes to thrive, healthy floodplains must be present. The equally important Tupelo tree is part of this cycle of life. Around Mother’s Day, for about two weeks, Tupelo trees bloom, creating a valuable food source for pollinators. As the blooms fade, seed pods form and eventually fall into the river. Some biodegrades helping feed those microbes, while others may take root and grow into new Tupelo trees.

 

Our final stop on the river was Prospect Bluff. It is believed to have been the site of the largest pre-Civil War free Black colony in North America. There is a great article by Doug Alderson that explores this important history in more detail.

As we headed back to the dock, one thing was clear: the Apalachicola River is much more than a beautiful waterway. It is a living, interconnected ecosystem where every floodplain, tree, bird, and microscopic organism plays an important role. Spending time on the river with those who know it best offers a deeper appreciation for this remarkable place and reminds us why protecting it is so important.
