U.S. Supreme Court Update

June 12, 2018

Dear Friends & Supporters,

Yesterday, I attended proceedings at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Truly, it was a remarkable process to witness our nation’s highest court in action. Admittedly, it was also somewhat deflating because no news came on the FL. vs. GA case.

Oral arguments occurred on January 8 with a decision to come later in the year. The Court’s decision announcement dates are known in advance, but the specific cases are unknown. As you can imagine, yesterday, I sat in the packed courtroom (between young, overly nervous law students) and hoped Monday would be, “The Day.” But, it was not and our collective waiting continues.

The Chief Justices will issue more decisions over the next three weeks on all cases heard before them this year, including FL. vs GA. You can check out the calendar here for “non-argument” days or easier yet, watch our website for announcements.

Be assured that Apalachicola Riverkeeper remains steadfast in our commitment to the protection and restoration of the Apalachicola River, Bay and Floodplain.

The Court’s decision is one of tremendous importance for the ecological health of the Apalachicola River and Bay and the numerous species, including humans, that are dependent upon it. I remain hopeful that the ruling will put us on a solid path to the equitable sharing and management of water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River Basin.

I hope we can count on your continued support. Please help get the word out about the significance of the the Apalachicola River region–a North American biodiversity hotspot with numerous national and international designations. This one-of-a kind American Treasure must be protected for generations to come.

Please consider making a donation today to support Apalachicola Riverkeeper’s continued work. The water of the ACF system can and must be shared equitably. Our work is as important as ever. Together, we make a difference. And together, we must continue to speak up and do right by the Apalachicola River and Bay.

Protecting a river and bay is a marathon. There are ups and downs, and curves and bends in our decades’ long course of work. Apalachicola Riverkeeper staff, board of directors, and volunteers are in this for the long haul. We hope you, too, will stay the course with us.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Georgia Ackerman
Riverkeeper and Executive Director
