Owl Creek Eco-Outing – June 6
June 6 was a beautiful day to be on the water. The sun was shining, the water was calm, and temperatures were warm without being too hot—perfect conditions for a paddle. Our group of eight participants came from Tallahassee, Carrabelle, Eastpoint, St. George Island, and Apalachicola, making for a wonderful mix of river enthusiasts from across the region.
We spent approximately two hours exploring Owl Creek and the Apalachicola River. Our route took us from Owl Creek into the river, where we made a U-turn before winding through majestic cypress and tupelo trees into Devin Creek. Another turn brought us back through Owl Creek and homeward bound to the boat ramp. The outing included both experienced paddlers and first-timers, and smiles were plentiful from start to finish.
Along the way, we were treated to sightings of two remarkable native plants: the Yellow Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia flava), a highly specialized carnivorous species, and the Smooth Meadow-beauty (Rhexia alifanus), whose vibrant blooms added splashes of color to the landscape.
Our next Eco-Outing will take place at Merritt’s Mill Pond on July 12. While it’s about a two-hour drive from Apalachicola, the crystal-clear spring waters and stunning scenery make it well worth the trip. Reservations are now open at www.apalachicolariverkeeper.org.
