Maclay Gardens Junior Ranger Jamboree

After a recent community outreach event in Tallahassee, volunteer Cameron Barton sent us the note below.  Cameron is an educator and parent. She’s also part of this year’s RiverTrek team, her second expedition with us. We think you’ll find her enthusiasm contagious. We do.

Cameron Barton and youth river trivia.

I just wanted to touch base on the event yesterday. I was inspired by all of the young minds that came to our table to learn about the Apalachicola River. Some of these youngsters had incredible and innovative ideas on how to clean up plastics in our waterways. There were college students eager to get involved, to volunteer, and to get their hands on real issues facing the river. I was really excited about their level of eagerness to be part of Apalachicola Riverkeeper.

We met folks that had been on the river at one time or another and some folks who were hearing about it for the first time. Some of the youngest children could identify indigo snakes and alligator snapping turtles. Families asked about signing up for hiking and kayaking trips to see more of the Apalachicola River and region.

From the little guys and gals to the oldest folks at Maclay Gardens, yesterday, I think we made a solid impact in helping people learn about what Apalachicola Riverkeeper is doing to support the river, floodplain and bay.  We all connected with the enthusiasm for protecting this precious Florida natural resource.  –Cameron
