Post Hurricane Fish Kill

Fish kills can happen for a variety of reasons with hurricanes. Click here. At present fish kills have been reported in Dead Lakes and the Apalachicola River. Causes are not yet confirmed. A combination of factors is likely. The public can help by reporting dead fish sightings (location important).

An incident report has been confirmed of a wastewater release in Gulf County, Wewahitchka. “Approximately 80,000 gallons of partially chlorinated effluent were released due to power loss during Hurricane Michael. The release entered the Apalachicola River.” Present impacts are unknown. Citizens should watch for further information by the Florida DEP. We will also share more information as it becomes available. Water quality testing is being conducted by DEP.
