Dead Lakes Eco-Educational Outing

“What were some trips highlights for you?” Here are a few excerpts from paddlers that joined us on Dead Lakes for our Fourth Saturday Paddle, April 28, 2018. Thank you trip leader, Matthew Godwin (Off the Map Expeditions) and safety sweep, Cameron Lewis.

Paddling with this colorful group of kayakers and canoeists through the West Arm of Dead Lakes Saturday was a real treat.  Tiny Tupelo blossoms floated on top of the dark water as we glided amongst the silvery cypress trees and knees.  Blue skies above made for a relaxing paddle on the Chipola.  Great guides provided local knowledge.  Fun to think about the bees of this important floodplain working as we paddled below the Spring blossoms.  Always relaxing to be on the water, keeping a keen eye out for golden Prothonotary Warblers flitting along the branches of the swampy woodlands.  Mississippi Kites soared above while Shellcracker fishermen motored past to their honey holes hidden in the maze of Wewahitchka’s hidden treasure, Dead Lakes.  –Cameron, volunteer eco-trip leader

It is a gorgeous venue. Trip well run and as always, very fine people.  –Mike, paddler

Great paddle and beautiful day! Highlights for me included the prothonotary warblers, trying out the sit-on-top style kayak and meeting new folks.  –Christy, paddler

It is hard to beat paddling with friendly people on a beautiful day in such a rich, diverse site full of history on its creation and the mighty Apalachicola River basin.  –Margaret, paddler

I want to thank the Apalachicola Riverkeeper for giving my family the chance to participate in April’s Fourth Saturday paddle.  We are not experienced paddlers but were provided loaner kayaks and were welcomed by the Riverkeeper staff (Georgia) and trip guide (Matt).  What a great way to make memories while instilling an appreciation for our region’s natural resources.  I will always be a supporter of the Riverkeeper and its mission.  Thanks to the great leaders, and inclusive opportunities, my family will be too!   –Jennifer, paddler
