That’s the message from American Rivers, the national organization that just released its list of our nation’s most endangered river systems. The rankings confirm what many of us already know: The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint system is in greater jeopardy than any other in America.

The question now is whether the courts, Congress or the Corps of Engineers will act to save our beloved Apalachicola River before it’s too late. Their decisions in the coming months will either help by mandating a sustainable flow of water for the Apalachicola River, Bay and floodplain— or cause irreparable harm by withholding it.

The good news is that we, the people, have the power to make a difference — to alter the disastrous course of recent history and impact the destiny of the Apalachicola River and Bay. It’s time for supporters and advocates to stand together and demand action from elected leaders and our public servants.

But our leaders won’t act unless people care. People will only care if they know what’s at stake. And they’ll only know if we come together with one voice and tell them.

Apalachicola Riverkeeper is spearheading a nationwide effort to alert the American people that one of our most ecologically significant national treasures is in peril. Help us tell our story to the people of America so that we can stop the destruction of our river and bay and begin to work together toward sustainable recovery. Please, donate now.

Former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham:

“The Apalachicola River may be the most important river in the United States that most Americans are not familiar with. The Apalachicola played a significant role in the history of the South and nourishes the Apalachicola Bay, one of the world’s most productive estuaries. This estuary, and the special economy and way of life that it supports, is dependent upon a sustained flow of fresh water from the river mixing with the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Tragically, in recent years, the mismanagement of the Apalachicola‐Flint‐Chattahoochee Basin has led to the collapse of this vital environmental and economic resource. American Rivers is an important advocate for the role that rivers play in the ecological diversity of America. The Apalachicola River could not be a more appropriate choice on which to focus the nation’s attention on the need to protect America’s rivers.”
